Local recordings
In January 2024 we ran a promotion for demo’s with the idea of introducing the studio to local musicians, aiming mainly at kids with bands. To our surprise no kids showed up, but some professional musicians did come for a demo with video. The original idea was to just do a simple recording with a single video stream, but since there were only a few musicians, we decided to do a bit extra work on each of them in order to get a more presentable result.
Avraam Papaioannou is a pro Ud player from Giannitsa. He teaches Ud and Tambur at the local music high school in Arta. He performs any Ud music he can get his hands on and is currently doing a doctorate in classical music at the University of Ioannina. Here he performs one of his own songs, with colleagues Ilias Psallidas on drums, Dimitris Kampolis on Politiki Lyra, and their student Artemis singing.
Urban Modal are a band of musicians who have a particular passion for the more Anatolian styles, which often seem like to blend between what is perceived as Turkish and Greek music. They live in Athens but are finishing their studies at the University of Ioannina. They are playing here a song with their friend Giorgos Kamatsos singing.
Dimitris Kampolis plays the Politiki Lyra, (in Turkey known as the Classic Kemence) and can be heard here playing and singing ‘Tell me, my light (..where are you from)’. With him Avraam Papaioannou on the Ud and Ilias Psallidas on the Bendir and Rek. Michiel was convinced to play some baritone guitar.
Percussionist Loukas Metaxas from Urban Modal came with a couple of fellow students to record this a capella piece ‘song for the road’ which he composed. None of the students are actually singers but the result needs no defending.
