For our first release we planned to make a music video for one of the three songs. The idea is to move away from the typical band-playing-in-the-studio type video’s and take inspiration from video’s like Michel Gondry’s work with Bjork in the 90s – often surreal, not very realistic and loosely connected to the songs. After a lot of preparation (script, shot lists, making props, finding the right clothes and location) we set out to shoot part of the clip up in the mountains close to the family house. We had a whole week for the shoot and about 40 shots that needed to be done, some with some practical effects. As the scenes needed a smoky look without sunlight, we were limited to film in cloudy weather, or after 4PM when the sun would sink behind the mountain ridge. Day one went to hell due to us taking too long to get Mufu’s hair in a repeatable shape. We were feeling like a bunch of amateur assholes. Day two we were in time and it was cloudy, but after we had dragged all the equipment into the valley (about 40 minutes of carrying), and had just done two shots, it started raining. We were feeling yet again like a bunch of assholes. We managed to get everything safely back into the van but it was yet another more or less lost day (and we had to think of Terry Gilliam’s disaster ending of his first attempt to film Don Quichote – which was also being filmed in a mountain valley until they were completely washed away by a thunderstorm, destroying equipment and nearly bringing Terry Gilliam to a state of bankruptcy) The third day seemed promising as it was cloudy from the morning while all weather forecasts claimed it would NOT rain. We hurried to get to the location, but while we were still carrying the gear, the sun came through. So we had to wait. From there on, overal it was mostly every day the same, sunny at noon, but we just made sure to be ready to start filming as soon as the sun dropped behind the ridge, and we did manage to film everything we wanted, and even do some reshoots. The remaining scenes are scheduled to be shot in the old castle of Arta during the summer. After that, it’s getting to grips with Davinci’s Fusion part of Resolve to make some digital adjustments and additions to the footage..
Meanwhile, the music keeps developing in small steps. We have found a fantastic drummer right in our hometown who likes what we are doing, and are preparing to record some parts with him in May. Stay tuned!
